About this work
The starting point is a photograph taken from the crowd in the middle of a concert at Barcelona’s Sala Apolo. The program splits it into colour layers, like a printing press, and runs each one with parallel diagonal lines: where the colour is strong the line vibrates in a zigzag and fills with ink; where it is weak it runs almost straight. Up close there are only coloured stripes; from a couple of metres away the stage, the balconies and the people appear.
It is drawn with 1.6 mm Bic ballpoints, cyan, lilac, yellow and pink, mounted one after another on the plotter: one full pass per colour over the same sheet of Canson Bristol XL. Ballpoint ink, oilier than a marker’s, leaves a stroke with a sheen that changes with the light.
